When the Gun Isn’t the Answer: A Clinic on Practical Defensive Tools
It’s no secret that a concealed handgun may not always be the most practical—or legal—option when facing a threat. There are many real-world situations where the use of deadly force is not justified, the defender is unarmed, or drawing a firearm could result in it being taken and used against them. Understanding and preparing for these scenarios is critical.
This comprehensive seven-hour clinic is designed to equip students with essential defensive skills and practical techniques using three alternative tools: oleoresin capsicum (OC)/pepper spray, small impact weapons, and small fixed-blade knives. These tools can serve as lifesaving options in situations where a firearm is either not available or not the appropriate response. However, simply carrying them is not enough. Without proper training, these tools can be ineffective—or even dangerous—in the hands of the unprepared.
